Good harvests ahead
The Royal Ploughing Ceremony yesterday delivered predictions for good harvests and an appropriate amount of rainfall.
The royal astrologer made these predictions based on the choices by sacred oxen and the Ploughing Lord, Agriculture Ministry permanent secretary Jaranthada Karnasuta.
The royal oxen ate grass and sesame seeds from the seven foods offered to them, so it was predicted there would be plentiful crops, foods, fruit and animal meat and the proper amount of rainfall.
Jaranthada was presented with a choice of three pieces of cloth of different lengths to wear. He picked the one measuring five palms, which predicted that rainfall would be average, rice abundant and fruits and animal meat bountiful.

Thaksin holds Nicaraguan passport
Fugitive Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is a "special ambassador" for Nicaragua and holds a diplomatic passport issued by the Central American country, the Nicaragua government said on Wednesday.Thaksin's interview from Aljazeera
Thaksin Shinawatra, the former Thai prime minister, has promised to return to the country from exile if the government moves to crack down on protesters.
He spoke to Al Jazeera about the situation and his "hopes for a peaceful solution" to the country's political crisis.
Al Jazeera: You said that if force is used against your supporters you would return to Thailand. When are you going back?
Thaksin: Yes, I'm thinking about it and I talked to my supporters; they are now still concerned about my security and safety. I'm thinking about it, I'm not planning yet.
I have to be sure if I go back I should not add to more violence. I should be able to find some peaceful resolution for the incident.
You have certainly urged a peaceful resolution to the problems that Thailand is facing and the world is seeing right now.
Yet, it is your supporters that have been out on the streets, commandeering vehicles, setting them alight, pushing them toward security services, setting tyres on fire. You have actually said you want the government to be overthrown and perhaps these actions have incited them.

That's really inciting the military to have a military coup against the incumbent government isn't it?

I said that if they were to stage a coup, the people would fight the coup.

I would like to invite an international independent body to come here to Thailand and look at the whole story.

The protest might be about ousting the government but evidence of continued social division, resentment and even disturbing hatred against ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra's political enemies could be observed at the red-shirt rally at Government House yesterday.

Timing not right to debate amnesty bill: chief coalition whip
Chief coalition whip Chinnaworn Boonyakiart on Thursday said he saw no justification for the House deliberation of the opposition-sponsored bill on amnesty.
"Under the circumstances, tackling the economic woes and addressing the plight of the people should have the priority," he said.
Chinnaworn said he suspected the amnesty for those involved in the political turmoil might be part of the "Taksin Plan" hatched by ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra to undermine the stability, the government and the country's reputation.
He said he has yet to seek an explanation why certain coalition MPs endorsed the draft bill.
The bill was lodged on Wednesday to await the time slot for the deliberation. It was sponsored by a group of 149 MPs from four parties, Pheu Thai, Puea Pandin, Chart Thai Pattana and Ruam Jai Thai Chart Pattana.

PM presides over the ceremony to hand out Bt2,000 cheques
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Thursday presided over the ceremony for the cash hand-out for Bangkok residents at the City Hall.
"I hope the cash will help to lessen the hardship in the people's livelihood and to spur the domestic spending," he said.
Abhisit advised recipients of the cash to prudently spend their money and avoid conspicous consumption.
He said there is justification for panicking about the economic slowdown. While trying to tough out the problem, the people could help by promoting local products and domestic tourism.
The cash hand-out is part of the stimulus plan. The government has earmarked Bt19 billion for each income earner with less than Bt15,000 salary to receive a one-off cheque worth Bt2,000.
